Abstract

This article presents an approach to rethinking the creation of a digital service portfolio for university libraries using design processes. Viewing the development of new services as a “wicked problem”, i.e. a problem with a high degree of uncertainty, allows design methods to be applied to service development. This methodological approach could provide libraries with new tools and opportunities for dealing with various technical and organizational challenges in service development. The aim is to use design methods to operationalize and focus the approach to service engineering at universities. The article provides examples to show how design methodology is particularly suitable for supporting service development, a task with a high level of socio-technical complexity that requires a commitment to change.
