R:hovono und die Spezifik kontrollierter Vokabulare in der Digital History

Abstract

Controlled vocabularies are becoming increasingly important when digital methods are applied to historical sources in historical research. In this context, NFDI4Memory initiated a multi-stage process to develop recommendations and white papers on controlled vocabularies. This paper outlines the initial context, explores key conceptual considerations, and presents preliminary findings before concluding with an outlook on future developments. It focuses on three main aspects of the process. First, it introduces R:hovono as a central tool designed to support the effective selection of vocabularies. Second, building upon this foundation, it develops and contextualizes criteria for evaluating the relevance and quality of controlled vocabularies. Third, it outlines how these criteria can be integrated into the registry as a profile matrix to support the community in the selection, use, and ongoing maintenance of controlled vocabularies.
