Die Meinungen zu den Open-Access-Verlagen MDPI, Frontiers und vormals Hindawi gehen auseinander. Von einigen werden sie gelobt für ihre effizienten Prozesse und ein niederschwelliges Publikationsangebot, andere bemängeln geringe Qualitätsstandards und fragwürdige Geschäftspraktiken, deren Ziel allein die Steigerung von Artikelzahlen sei. Die vorliegende Untersuchung unternimmt den Versuch einer Einordnung dieser Verlage anhand zahlreicher Quellen und eigener Analysen.
