Wie Bibliotheken in den USA und Kanada mit Book Challenges umgehen

Im kanadischen und US-amerikanischen Bibliothekswesen gibt es eine Tradition, wie mit Beschwerden von Nutzer*innen über Medien im Bibliotheksbestand – sogenannten challenges – umgegangen wird. Einerseits haben sich auf den nationalen Ebenen seit Jahrzehnten Infrastrukturen etabliert (Arbeitsgruppen, Kampagnen, Datensammlungen, grundlegende Policy-Dokumente) sowie ein Konsens ausgeprägt, welcher diese Beschwerden als Versuch von «book bans» und Angriffe auf die
Meinungsfreiheit interpretiert. Andererseits haben sich im Handeln der Bibliotheken selber Abläufe etabliert, die in das Bestandsmanagement integriert sind. Die Beschwerden werden hier als Recht der Nutzer*innen begriffen, auf die es zu reagieren gilt, u.a. mit Verhandlungen, die an Gerichtsverfahren erinnern. Mit dem Fokus auf public libraries und school libraries stellt der Artikel diese Situation, so wie sie aktuell ist, vor.
