In spring 2014, Marburg University Library evaluated the physical condition of its historical book collection. The aim was to gain an evidence based estimation of budget, time, and staff needed to preserve the cultural heritage. Lead by Dr. Helmut Bansa, former head of the Institute of Book and Manuscript Restauration of the Bavarian State Library, Munich, library staff and two interns from the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design classified age and physical condition of a statistically relevant sample from the collection. Since Dr. Bansa’s well established method of evaluating the physical condition was applied to such a large and heterogenous collection for the first time, it was necessary to modify the approach appropriately. The survey revealed some intriguing insights about the character of the collection, the most common types of damages and appropriate actions. The results were of particular relevance with regard to the relocation of the collection to the new main library at the end of 2017.

ER -
